Nació el 13 de Abril de 1923 en Breslau, Silesia.Huyendo de la Alemania nazi llega a Chile junto a sus padres Leo y Hanna en 1939.En Concepción finaliza su educación media en el Liceo Fiscal de Hombres. En la Universidad de Concepción estudia historia e historia del arte entre 1942 y 1946.
