En 1924, un grupo de 30 sefardíes liderados por Zacarías Geni fundó la comunidad con el objetivo de mantener la tradición religiosa sefaradí, fomentar la educación hebrea, apoyar el sionismo y promover actividades sociales y culturales. En los años siguientes se abre la sede social y el cementerio. En 1927 obtiene personería jurídica, formándose el primer directorio bajo la presidencia de Mauricio Palombo.
